Completion of Gunwales and Trim

By slockhart - Posted on 01 December 2009

Well after a couple of months of inactivity, I have gotten back to work!  Last week I finished the gunwales and trim.  The attached photos will better explain. Photo# 089 shows that I used five .5" strips of pine for the gunwales in addition to the .25" marine plywood.  On the outside, I used another .25" peice of pine trim along with a piece of .75" molding (rub rail).  The rubrail was installed in peices since the trim only came in 10' and 8' lengths.

When completed, the gunwales and rubrail will be stained and finished.  The remainder of the boat will be painted.

Photo# 088 shows the trim I used for the rub rail.  It was intstalled with Titebond waterproof glue and 1-inch #8 brass screws every 10-12 inches.

In photo#084 the bow is depicted. showing the wooden block I used to serve as a semi-handle.  This is where the forestay will be attached.  I routered the bottom edge which makes a nice semi-handle for pulling/positioning the boat on a trailer.

Over the weekend I flipped the boat over and installed the skeg and also cut the hole for the dagger board. Those photos will come in my next post.
