Corsair 13--Problems with bottom panel assembly

By slockhart - Posted on 02 June 2009

For some reason, I am not able to navigate thru the image link....I'm sure it is probably user error or my out-dated computer.

Anyway, as I said in my earlier post, the bottom panels are not matching up as I had hoped and I'm sure I cut them according to the dimensions provided in the plans.  As you will see in the attached photos (074-077), I have attempted to gradually bend and/or shape the bottom panels to form a better fit with the front end of the side panels at the front of the boat.  I did this by wrapping an old halyard around the tip hoping to bend the panels down.  I let this set overnight and all day (about 20 hours).

Tonight I was surprised to see that there was significant bend in the panels and it looks much better.  Its still not right yet, but it is looking better.  I decided to go ahead and stitch the bottom panels at the transom and along both sides of the boat ---working from the stern towards the bow.  I also re-stitched the middle seam / edge of the two bottom panels---also from stern to bow.  I will post those photos tomorrow hopefully.

Also---you will see a board sticking up at the point of the bow and another stick in the joint about 24 inches from the front of the boat.  these were put in place to keep the two bottom panels from overlapping when the downward pressure was applied by the halyard.  it keeps the panels separated yet allows the pressure to be applied.

Is there any chance that the panels could be on the wrong sides? Flip them both upside down and see what that does for the fit.

Thanks for the response but "no"....the panels are on the right sides and Halleluja!!!   I think I spelled that right--but I really don't care!   I got the bottom panels to fit tonight!!!!  It took alot of bending and some re-stitching but I was able to get the panels to fit with a little trimming.  I am sure that I cut the panels out just as the plans required but I ended up taking my jigsaw and trimming the centerline edge of both bottom panels about 3/4 of an inch on both sides.

I have photographed the the bottom panels stitched in place and will post those photos tomorrow.  The only void I can see at this point is a small hole about the size of a quarter and it is right in the middle of the joint where the 2 bottom panels and the 2 side panels meet up at the point of what would be called the "stem" if the boat had one.  That was actually my next idea if I couldn't get the bottom panels to fit.  (A bow stem may have been a quicker fix to the problem).  I am convinced that will fill up nicely when I get to epoxying the the bottom panels to the side panels.

My next step is to duck -tape the joint all the way around the boat where the side panels and bottom panels meet.  Then I will upright the boat  and attempt to get that seam epoxied.
